The Bhopal Enigma after 'The Water Carrier'
by Stephen Vince This sculpture 'The Bhopal Enigma' was requested by The Bhopal Medical Appeal based in Brighton England. They asked for something that reflected the problems caused by the negligence of Union Carbide, now DOW Chemicals, at their factory in Bhopal, India. Hideous. The factory leaked gas that killed so many people asleep in their beds nearly 30 years ago; and it continues its destruction to this day through gross contamination of the city's water and environment. The sculpture was originally conceived from imaginings of one of the beautiful ladies carrying water on their head; the vase simply grew from that idea. Of course, the water is now poisoned by vicious chemicals from the abandoned factory, they say. Its inaugural journey will mean that the sculpture has to march with The People. The Bhopal Enigma is fabricated from polished stainless steel. Pictures of the sculpture on its inaugural journey, Saturday 28th July 2012. |
Bhopal Enigma at London Tower Hamlets
Saturday 28th July 2012 The Bhopal Enigma makes its inaugural run at the "Counter Olympics Demonstration against the Corporate Olympics" which marches from Mile End Park to Wennington Green on Saturday 28th July 2012. We are in exalted company in this park. Not only do we cross Piers Gough's famous 'Green Bridge' but we see Rachael Whiteread's famous sculpture 193 Grove Road on the edge of the park. Whoops! This fantastic sculpture which won the Turner Prize for Rachel Whiteread was destroyed in 1994. How short sighted. Read about it. And the 60,000 Men of Essex camped here to meet Richard II on the 14th June 1381 during the 'Peasants Revolt'. Fitting. We can also see the Ragged School Museum (saved from demolition by local residents) as originally created by Dr Barnardo to educate local children in 1877. The People are marching to highlight so many horrors caused by the Olympics in London from the destruction of Leyton Marshes (for a practice Badminton Court) to the extraordinary issue over Freedom of Speech and the stance taken by Tower Hamlets. see CON It was to travel to Victoria Park or the fitting The People's Park as it is known locally. Victoria Park famous for its own Speakers Corner like famed Hyde Park. Tower Hamlets have now forbidden this - and diverted The People to Wennington Green. |
